Dowie in line for England debut

Dowie (centre) is the niece of former QPR manager Iain Dowie

Everton's Natasha Dowie could make her England debut in Thursday's World Cup qualifier against Turkey in Izmir.

The 21-year old niece of ex-Northern Ireland striker Iain Dowie has hit 15 goals in 14 Everton games this season.

And with first-choice strikers Kelly Smith and Eni Aluko both unavailable, coach Hope Powell may give her a start.

"Natasha's started the season really well," said Powell. "She's in the squad due to her current form and hopefully she can become a real asset for us."

Dowie could provide the firepower that was lacking against Malta last month despite the tie ending in an 8-0 win against the weakest of England's qualifying group rivals.

Now Powell's team, in the second of their eight qualifiers, take on another of Europe's minnows as they look to move a step closer to the 2011 finals in Germany.
Powell said: "The win against Malta was a good start to our qualifying campaign in terms of the result, but it was disappointing that we didn't score more goals.

"So although we will rightly be expected to beat Turkey, we'll have to be better with our play in the final third and with our finishing."

Last Saturday the Turks, ranked 49 places below England at 57th in the world, were trounced 5-0 on home soil by Spain in their first qualifier.

Iain Dowie was last a coach at Newcastle with Alan Shearer

They should be no match for England, who beat Malta with a largely inexperienced side that showed seven changes from September's Euro 2009 final in Helsinki.

With key players like goalkeeper Rachel Brown and midfielder Katie Chapman now missing as well as Smith and Aluko, Powell will again make use of her fringe players.

"With no disrespect to Turkey," said the coach, "a game like this presents us with the opportunity to help develop players as senior internationals.

"The girls who have been brought in have deserved their call-ups, and hopefully we can produce a sharper all-round performance than we did against Malta."
