The economy must be picking up given the quietness on this blog, I mean forum.................

Some interesting match-ups this weekend, here are my picks, lets see yours!

Andro - Solar Red - Sorry Omega, going with Andro for the sake of consistency.

Atletico - ASG - I'll take ASG, they played well and have momentum.

Figo - Comets - Comets are up and down and Figo is up. Tough one to call IMO. I'll take the easy route, TIE.

CC - Tyler - Tyler

Gunners - Barca - This one has gone back and forth, could go either way. I'll take Gunners to finish strong.

Solar - DTS - You may see a white towel or two on the field before the game even starts. DTS

FCD Blue - FW - FW

FCD Suarez - DT Crafty Marcio - Does the recent Suarez upswing give them a shot? Standing room only, be there. I'll have to take Craft but would like to see Suarez do well.

Force - DT Red - DT Red finishes the Force off. Is this the first time a team goes winless in D1? GOOSE EGG award goes to the FORCE.

FIFA are considering scrapping the offside rule, according to a report in The Times.

The newspaper reports that FIFA president Sepp Blatter has discussed what would be the most radical rule change in the sport for decades.

Blatter has apparently spoken to the president of the International Hockey Federation, Leandro Nagre, about how hockey abolished the rule in the 1990s.

"He asked me a lot of questions about it and how successful it was, although he never offered an opinion, so it was difficult to judge what football might do," said Negre.

"But he did seem very interested in how we had implemented it."

The offside rule in hockey was abolished in 1998 after a trial period two years earlier, a move which has been credited with making the game more free-flowing and exciting as a spectacle.

Veteran BBC sports commentator Barry Davies firmly believed that it would be a great move for football.

"I would love to see it given a trial in the lower leagues," he said.

"It would probably take a long time for players to adjust. It's also very demanding physically, but I was amazed at how quickly hockey adapted and there's no doubt the game is better for it."

Davies believes that the abolition of offside is not the only rule that football could borrow from hockey, suggesting that the green card - which leads to a two minutes in the sin bin for players - would also work well.

ENGLAND, as expected, have been named as one of the top eight seeds ahead of the World Cup finals draw on Friday but France have been left in pot two.

It means Les Bleus, who defeated Republic of Ireland so controversially in the play-offs, could be drawn against Fabio Capello's men.

The seedings are based on October's FIFA rankings and also include hosts South Africa - if they had used November's rankings then France would have edged England out.

Portugal, traditional foes for England in major tournaments, also wait in pot two and will be dangerous opponents but now it is a case of all eyes on the draw on Friday, when we will have the best reaction from the top pundits in the game.
You don't win anything with youngsters. Not in December anyway. Sir Alex Ferguson has heard it all a million times before, and he proved the doubters wrong yet again on Tuesday by advancing to the Carling Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

At the heart of the victory, a young lad by the name of Darron Gibson, who took on the Paul Scholes role for the evening by scoring two beauties from the edge of the penalty area.

A week ago United chucked away their four-year undefeated home record in Europe, losing to minnows Besiktas - a team their first XI would have blown to smithereens.

Ferguson got it in the neck, he had toyed with a piece of the club's history and let the paying fans down.

Sir Alex hasn't made a career out of giving up on his youngsters though, so Gabriel Obertan, Danny Welbeck and Darron Gibson were all handed a second chance alongside fellow youngster Ritchie De Laet against Spurs.

Guess who was proved right.

Despite surrendering possession and the bulk of the chances to Harry Redknapp's strong Tottenham XI, it was United who cruised into the break 2-0 up.

In fairness, Nemanja Vidic had to work overtime at the back for United, blocking three times from Robbie Keane and stopping a certain Jermain Defoe goal as Spurs created all the best chances of the first half.

Now for Ferguson's youngsters to keep their side of the bargain in attack.

Anderson strode forward, cutting back off the left wing to feed Gibson, the Republic of Ireland international drew back the right peg and drove a daisy-cutter past Heurelho Gomes for 1-0.

Spurs continued to knock the ball around, causing panic at frequent intervals in the United defence, yet they conceded again before the break to enter the changing rooms scratching their heads.

This time Gibson created and scored the goal, playing a sharp one-two with Welbeck before opening up his body to curl a Beckham-like beauty into the top corner.

Maybe you do win the odd game with youngsters.
Notable exclusion

One hopeful not featuring was the much-maligned figure of England goalkeeper Ben Foster, relegated to the stands as Tomasz Kuszczak kept goal with Ben Amos on the bench.

What a difference 10 months make. Back in February Foster was the hero of the hour in the very same competition against the very same team.

Kuszczak had already been called upon to handle well from a Defoe stinger in the first half, and he had to be alert again after the break as the impressive Gareth Bale set up David Bentley - who should have done better.

"Should have done better". The perfect assessment of Bentley's time at White Hart Lane.

Moments later the same was being said again as he ghosted into the back post, meeting another left wing cross but sending his header the wrong side of the near post.

Spurs sent on Peter Crouch in a bid to change the game, but it is United's youngsters who progress to within two games of creating a new bit of history for the club.

Emile Heskey, Ashley Young and James Milner served timely reminders to Fabio Capello of their England credentials as Aston Villa moved a step closer to their first League Cup triumph in 14 years thanks to a 4-2 win over Portsmouth.

Heskey cancelled out Stiliyan Petrov's early own goal to mark his return to the Villa side, which featured Stewart Downing from the start for the first time since his £11 million switch from Middlesbrough.

Downing's impact would be immediate, scoring the clincher to give England's favourite Italian a gentle nudge to notify him of his return to fitness.

However, it would be Villa's other two wingers who would once again press their claims for a ticket to South Africa, with Milner capping yet another lung-bursting display with an absolute rocket while Ashley Young's tap-dancing feet ensured Villa reached the semi-finals.

Whisper it quietly, but defeat for Avram Grant and Pompey might be a relief.

Grant's reign as Chelsea boss was largely tainted by criticisms of his deployment of Nicolas Anelka in a winger role, but what the Israeli would have given for Anelka as he opted for Danny Webber and John Utaka in attack on Tuesday.

Gone were the luxuries of Lampard, Ballack, Essien, Cole and Mikel. Grant didn't even have Jamie O'Hara or Kevin Prince Boateng available - both cup-tied after their belated summer moves.

Premier League survival is Grant's priority, and on the basis of this defensive display, he has a lot of work to do.
Goals galore

Things started well enough for Pompey, with Michael Brown and Utaka threatening before Petrov sliced Webber's corner past Brad Guzan.

The lead lasted 120 seconds.

Herman Hreidarsson never looks the most co-ordinated individual on a football pitch, and it was he who allowed Heskey to burst clear, the England man scoring a timely goal as Carlton Cole braces himself for a potential period on the sidelines.

The equalizer changed the momentum of the match and suddenly it was Villa in command.

Milner covered every blade of grass, working his socks off running towards his own goal, before charging forward to whip cross after cross into the box.

His goal was a thing of beauty. Tricking his way past Brown on the left flank, Milner cut inside before arrowing a belter past Asmir Begovic.

Pompey battled hard in the second period to retrieve the situation, but Milner and Young continued to look the most dangerous men on the pitch.

Fittingly it was Young who would have a hand in Villa's final two goals.

First he delivered a deflected cross into the path of Downing, who showed a striker's instinct for 3-1, and then - after Kanu's shot slipped under Guzan for 3-2, Young capped off a fine solo display by rounding off Gabriel Agbonlahor's cross in the dying minutes.
